Coordinator Ecosystem-based Management (EBM) Network

The West Coast Ecosystem-based Management (EBM) Network is working to overcome the challenges of protecting the coastal environment by managing natural resources based on ecosystem principles. The Network is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time Coordinator position. This exciting opportunity is based in the San Francisco Bay Area of California and entails frequent travel West Coast-wide. Overview The West Coast EBM Network, a project of the Tides Center, is an alliance of coastal and ocean resource managers and practitioners working in six geographies: San Juan Islands, Washington; Port Orford, Oregon; and Humboldt Bay, Elkhorn Slough, Morro Bay, and the Ventura River watershed, California. Through the Network, these partners share lessons learned, identify common needs, and strive to overcome the challenges of putting EBM into practice. The Network Coordinator will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and evaluating relationships and communication vehicles necessary for a successful learning network. They will support group initiatives with technical expertise and identify relevant resources for data, information, and tools. The Coordinator will organize targeted events and tailored training opportunities for the local and regional groups involved in the six EBM projects. These events will be aimed at improving knowledge and skills capacities to accomplish EBM goals. As the Network progresses, the Coordinator will develop a long-term vision for EBM on the West Coast with common indicators to illustrate regional successes and illuminate the meaning of ecosystem management to elected officials and other decision makers at all level of government, stakeholders, and the public. Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a graduate degree in coastal/marine policy or management, or a graduate degree in science with at least two years of policy experience. A minimum of two years of professional experience is required.

This part-time, temporary position will facilitate communication between FUF, neighbors and community groups in the Sunset to promote and execute a neighborhood tree planting in the Sunset. Through our grassroots, community-led model FUF has planted over 42,000 trees in San Francisco since 1981. Friends of the Urban Forest recognizes that the Sunset neighborhood suffers from a lack of green spaces, tree coverage and community engagement. But many residents in the Sunset have asked that more trees be planted in their heavily concreted section of the city. We have held four community plantings in the Sunset so far in 2008, planting over 172 new street trees with the help of hundreds of residents and volunteers. FUF has received funding and support from two national partners with which to offer FREE trees to residents in the Sunset. We plan to hold a large community planting on Saturday, October 18th, accommodating at least 400 volunteers and planting at least 100 street trees. Fluency in written and spoken Chinese required Your tasks are: � Outreach to residents in the Sunset to invite them to plant more street trees with FUF � Inform and engage the residents in the Sunset (19th Avenue to the Ocean) by holding a kick-off meeting in August and a pre-planting meeting in September � Help build community by collaborating with local community groups to help promote the project and attract planters and volunteers � Assist the Community Outreach Manger & the Planting Managers with the management of planting day and logistics leading up to the event Responsibilities include: � Contacting neighborhood organizations, community groups and politicians to communicate FUF tree planting goals and help them to promote the upcoming planting � Sharing FUF information and benefits of trees with interested neighbors through email and phone � Representing FUF at community events to share information about our programs and gain support for the Sunset planting � Oversee promotional materials: flyers, ads, web updates � Collecting tree planting application forms from 100+ residents! Qualifications: � Fluency in written and spoken Chinese required � Strong communication skills, including public speaking and one-on-one interactions � Good organizational skills, demonstrated initiative, flexibility and creativity � Interest in urban social and environmental issues and concerns � A high level of organization and prompt responsiveness � Experience with computers including Microsoft Office and email � Understanding and appreciation of different cultures, peoples and communications styles and methods is highly useful This is a part time contract position requiring 8 to 12 hrs per week now through October 30. ABOUT THE POSITION
LEJ seeks a creative and inspired Executive Director whose senior management background in
the non-profit field illustrates a commitment to community organizing and advocacy around the
issues of environmental justice and youth development. The ideal candidate will have strong
management skills and a track record in securing funds from diverse sources. Experience
managing a diverse staff, acting as a mentor to staff members and ensuring their professional
development will be highly valued. Also highly desired is a leader capable of building bridges
and partnerships in the community. We especially encourage applications from persons of color
who reflect the diversity of the Bayview Hunters Point (BVHP) community.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Executive Director is responsible for overall direction and management of programs,
personnel, fundraising and finances of LEJ. A major responsibility is guiding the final
construction and launch of LEJ’s “EcoCenter” – an environmental education center at Heron's
Head Park that will be the first totally off-grid building in San Francisco. In consultation with
the Board of Directors, the Executive Director oversees the organization’s strategic direction and
program development. The Executive Director is the primary contact between LEJ partners and
stakeholders in the civic, philanthropic, and BVHP community.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
Community Representation
• Serve as a spokesperson and consensus builder for LEJ in the community, developing
and maintaining contacts with civic, philanthropic, and community leaders.
• Act as a local, regional, and national leader on behalf of LEJ and the environmental
justice movement.
Fund Development
• Primary organization fundraiser -- works in concert with development staff to set fund
strategies, develop grants and cultivate individual donor, government, foundation and
corporate sponsor relations.
Financial and Organizational Management
• Develop and manage a $1 million+ budget and the overall fiscal management of LEJ
with the support of the operations manager and contract accountant.
• Maintain official records of LEJ activities and meetings, and file reports to the LEJ
Board as directed.
Program Development
• Actively lead development of new programs and expand existing programs in
collaboration with staff and community partners. Bring a creative and entrepreneurial
enthusiasm to developing programs addressing food security, inner-city eco-restoration,
redevelopment, youth programs and other key areas of LEJ's activity.
Staff and Office Management
• Recruit and supervise staff, and serve as the liaison between staff and LEJ Board.
• Ensure training and professional development of staff members.
• Ensure the viability and smooth operations of the LEJ office.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Minimum of 5 years work experience in a senior or executive capacity at a nonprofit
organization with a diverse workforce; experience in financial management and multiple
program management.
• Demonstrated commitment to and leadership role in the environmental justice movement.
• Demonstrated commitment to youth leadership and natural comfort working in a youth
based environment.
• Experience working in communities of color.
• Experience in successful fundraising for non-profit organizations.
• Ability to prioritize, delegate work, and manage a staff.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Excellent organizational skills.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience conceptualizing, piloting and managing innovative programs.

Job Description

People’s Grocery is seeking a new Farm Manager to be trained under the existing Farm Manager to take over all food production on our two acre farm located in Sunol, CA. Prospective candidates will undergo a 26 week apprenticeship program whereby he or she will work directly with and report directly to the current Farm Manager. Upon successful completion of the 26 week period successful candidate will take over the Farm Manager’s role and report to Director of Programs. The qualified candidate would have some agricultural experience but, more importantly, will have a willingness to learn all aspects of an organic farming system, a strong work ethic, a willingness to work long hours in a variety of weather conditions, a great love for the outdoors, a desire to get very dirty on a daily basis, a strong affinity for working with others and interpersonal skills for managing small and large groups. Lastly, and most importantly, the ideal candidate understands the crisis the West Oakland community is currently facing in regards to access to fresh produce and recognizes that by controlling the means to grow large amounts of produce People’s Grocery can make significant steps towards alleviating part of this problem.

Responsibilities:
All aspects of farm planning and labor including:
· crop planning
· seed ordering
· crop rotation
· seeding, planting
· transplanting
· cultivation
· irrigation
· soil fertility maintenance
· coordination with greenhouse manager
· harvesting and storing
· food distribution
· basic tool maintenance and storage
· all farm related composting activities including sourcing and storing compost
· assuring that all procedures are safe to all involved

Additional responsibilities include supervising farm staff, including youth interns, and organizing weekly farm and volunteer work activities including, but not limited to, harvesting, harvest sequencing, processing, planting, and weeding.

Farm Manager is also responsible for organizing large group volunteer work hours and work functions including large manual labor tasks. At times the Farm Manager is responsible for hosting and providing education to visiting groups.

The Farm Manager is responsible for keeping complete clear and concise logs of all of the above activities as needed for tracking PG farm activities as well as CCOF/Organic Certification.

Farm Manger is responsible to attend all People’s Grocery staff meetings and some special events when requested.

Qualifications
· Experience working in West Oakland or a low-income community of color
· Farm/garden/agricultural experience is preferred but not required
· Excellent organizational and planning skills; team player and a self starter
· Bilingual or bicultural skills desirable, but not required
· Ability to work well with diverse groups, sensitivity to issues of race, class, and gender within the workplace and in the community at large
· Candidate must be able to lift 50 lbs, walk up stairs, and work under difficult environmental conditions including excessive heat, moisture, and cold temperatures
· Valid California Drivers License

COMPENSATION
Starting wage is 15$ an hour for 30 hours per week. Apprentice training will be for 26weeks. Upon completion of 26 week training potential employee will be increased to full time work, with benefits and salary increase to be determined.
