Director of Communications and Marketing

Position: Director of Communications and Marketing Reports to: Executive Director Revised: February 14, 2014 AGENCY OVERVIEW Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA) - Building on its 40-year history, MEDA is advancing innovative approaches to asset development. Its efforts are focused on serving low-income, Spanish-speaking San Franciscans. Our direct service programs serve 6,000 individuals each year through homeownership counseling and foreclosure intervention, business development, digital literacy, workforce development, financial education and free tax preparation. We also devote resources to research and evaluation, community organizing and advocacy. In the process, MEDA is helping to develop best practices in the field. In December 2012, MEDA was awarded a 5-year, $30 million implementation grant from the Department of Education to implement the Mission Promise Neighborhood, a neighborhood-based effort to improve education and create family economic stability for in the Mission District through a cradle- to college- to career continuum of services. This initiative involves 26 community based organization partners, as well as City of San Francisco government agencies, the San Francisco Unified School District, and the Mayor’s Office of San Francisco as close collaborators in the implementation effort. MEDA is the lead agency, fiscal agent and project manager for the Mission Promise Neighborhood. POSITION OVERVIEW Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Communications and Marketing will be responsible for translating the organization’s overall mission into strategic communications that support agency goals and programs. The Director of Communications and Marketing will handle the development, management, direction, and administration of policies and programs related to social marketing, brand enhancement, public relations and media affairs for the organization. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Strategy Development & Implementation • Plan and implement the organization’s marketing and communications strategy and vision, including tactics to reach specific audiences, messaging, budgeting and production of collateral • Create and implement marketing & communications plans for MEDA and the Mission Promise Neighborhood initiative with the goal of raising visibility and maximizing community involvement • Mentor and manage a team consisting of a Media Communications Specialist, Graphics and Design Specialist and various contractors in delivering both proactive and responsive communications to support agency goals and programs • Coordinate closely with the Senior Management Team at MEDA, program, policy and fundraising staff to ensure marketing and communications strategy is aligned with and supporting MEDA’s organizational goals • Engage Executives and key stakeholders with content development, practices and reporting • Develop a crisis communications strategy, including rollout and execution of the strategy as needed. • Evaluate, select and supervise outside agencies and vendors; including design agencies, advertising agencies, freelance writers, videographers and print/production vendors • Support community engagement efforts through the production of community-oriented marketing and engagement events, media appearances, collateral distribution and other methods, working closely with program staff Materials Production • Coordinate the production of quality bilingual marketing materials with consistent branding and graphic presentation, including newsletters, brochures, annual report, etc. • Write speeches, articles, and columns for publication, press release, media advisories, and other materials • Responsible for the development of the organization’s strategic branding, messaging and community outreach strategies • Create innovative approaches to deliver MEDA’s messages, impact and outcomes through materials design and distribution • Enhance MEDA’s visibility, image, and influence in the areas of asset building and community economic development • Represent MEDA at appropriate meetings as requested to raise the visibility of MEDA in the community • Lead the generation of online content that engages audience segments and leads to measureable action Social & Online Media • Supervise web design and maintenance with webmaster and marketing/communications staff for MEDA and Mission Promise Neighborhood sites and ensure that new, consistent and engaging information (article links, stories and events) is created regularly • Develop and manage a social media engagement model and best practices toolkit; train and coach contributors and internal team on social media tools and techniques. • Create and distribute through various online media channels compelling success stories of MEDA and Mission Promise Neighborhood clients, the community, and the organization • Supervise Media Communications Specialist and create strategy to maximize the use of MEDA’s social media platforms, including Facebook, LinkedIn, Youtube, Twitter, and other platforms. Ensure content is engaging, updated regularly and accurately reflective of the organization’s values, goals and activities • Supervise production of MEDA blog, ensuring relevant, engaging and compelling content is created and distributed through a variety of media channels, enhancing and building MEDA’s online media presence Contact Management, News Media, Other • Implement centralized contact management strategy through Salesforce and other platforms to ensure information is regularly delivered to MEDA’s various contacts (media, funders, partners, clients, individual donors, etc.) • Train MEDA staff and partners as needed on communications issues, such as storytelling, interacting with the press, and other topics • Write and develop compelling speeches and talking points for MEDA’s Executive team and other staff as needed • Create and implement news media strategy to maximize coverage of MEDA in both Spanish and English media • Serve as main point of contact for all media relations at MEDA and coordinate staff involvement with reporters • Monitor coverage of MEDA through various media sites, and produce reports and analysis on coverage and impact for Management Team and board QUALIFICATIONS • Proven success as marketing/communications leader and brand ambassador for a dynamic, fast paced organization • High energy leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels • 10+ years’ experience in leading marketing and communications in either a national non-profit organization with a strong record of marketing and branding success, or in a corporate environment • Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing or Communications, Business or a related field. Master’s Degree a plus • Commitment to social justice and/or experience working with social justice oriented issues and organizations • Effective collaborator with all constituent groups including staff, Board members, volunteers, donors, program participants, and other supporters. • Strong demonstrated experience developing and implementing marketing strategies and plans • Excellent English writing/editing and verbal communications skills; Spanish a plus but not required • Self-starter, able to work independently, and entrepreneurial: enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives. • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to prioritize multiple tasks • Critical thinking ability for high level planning, analyzing and problem solving • Outcome focused with the ability to effectively track and evaluate impact of efforts, and to successfully lead projects through to completion according to schedule TO APPLY Please click on the following link to submit your application for this position. http://medasf.applicantstack.com/x/detail/a2lg3zanzkrk
